Sean Fader: Insufficient Memory | Queer American Memorials

RL Window
June 13 – August 17, 2024

Sean Fader’s Insufficient Memory | Queer American Memorials is a body of work that focuses on the years 1999/2000, just after Matthew Shepard’s brutal murder and President Clinton’s State of the Union address calling for the Hate Crimes Prevention Act (a bill not signed until 2009). Using the digital technology of the time – the Mavica camera – Fader memorializes sites across the United States in which queer people were murdered during those same years.

Debuting in RL Window is a dual channel video that stitches together images from this powerful body of work. Fader’s presentation, viewable from the High Line, foreshadows the memorials he is developing to honor the victims documented by Insufficient Memory.
